All of the interpreters we work with are registered with the National Register for Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Disabled people (NRCPD) or Register of British Sign Language Interpreters (RBSLI). They are all also members of the Visual Language Professionals (VLP) or Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI), and many hold additional memberships.
All of our interpreters have:
British Sign Language (BSL) is the preferred language of over 87,000 Deaf people in the UK for whom English may be a second or third language. A total of 151,000 individuals in the UK can use BSL - this figure does not include professional BSL users, Interpreters, Translators, etc. unless they use BSL at home.
Sign languages are fully functional and expressive languages; at the same time, they differ profoundly from spoken languages. BSL is a visual-gestural language with a distinctive grammar using handshapes, facial expressions, gestures and body language to convey meaning.
According to NRCPD (National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People), there are 1156 registered sign language interpreters (RSLI) and a further 260 trainee sign language interpreters (TSLI) in the UK. There are 22 registered sign language translators and two trainee sign language translators. There are also only 39 registered qualified Lipspeakers in the Uk (Source: NRCPD, April 2019).
